About Karl

For years, Karl has been interested in science and science journalism. He received his B.S. in Genetics at UC Davis, and is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics (with some science journalism) at UW-Madison. While pursuing a career in plant genetics and crop improvement, he plans to communicate his and other fields to the public. With biotechnology and other issues surrounding genetics entering into the public discussion, it becomes apparent that in order to discuss and make decisions about these issues as a society, we need to educate ourselves about those issues. Dedicated to making an open genetics resource that is easily accessible and accurate, Karl founded the [dnawiki]DNAWiki.

Karl also contributes to the Davis Wiki, founded the [madison]Madison Wiki, and helps out with perfecting Wiki Spot.

Thanks for the honey! I've been slowly (and sometimes not so slowly!) eating it by the spoonful. Delicious! —PhilipNeustrom

2007-10-16 22:13:59   Hey! I used to read your column in the Aggie. Yeah, I started the C-U wiki, but I haven't really added anything because I've been deluged in work. Also because when it comes down to it, I don't really know anything about Champaign-Urbana. —RaghavKrishnapriyan

2007-12-06 19:47:36   Hey, thanks for jumping in on the Climate Change wiki. It was driving me nuts that I could watch the speculation turn in the wrong direction without being able to correct it. —JabberWokky

2007-12-07 03:52:00   I'm actually enjoying helping them out in the same way that I assist with the ASUCD stuff... I have no idea if I agree with them or what their content is, so I can purely treat it like a librarian/publisher/editor: focus on the technical aspects, the mechanics and the pure information management issues.

By the way, Sarah and I were chatting about the Household Hacker1 and I mentioned your name. She perked up and said "the guy who wrote the Inoculated Mind"? She apparently enjoyed your column quite a bit. (And as I write this I finally remembered to point her to your blog). I assume you know the [WWW]Universe of Discourse blog? —JabberWokky

2008-09-03 04:37:53   Hey Karl, I noticed [WWW]http://www.madisonwiki.org/ is no longer resolving. Did you lose the domain? Do you want me to switch it off and have you folks use madison.wikispot.org for the time being? It looks like you can renew the domain if you act quickly! —PhilipNeustrom

2008-09-04 19:23:08   Thanks, it is renewed! —KarlMogel
