2008-09-12 22:15:17   Welcome! About GFDL / CC-By: of course, CC-By work can be used on wikipedia, but not the other direction. I'm sure you saw [WWW]this discussion when it happened. It would be great to see it come to light! —PhilipNeustrom

2008-09-12 22:53:54   I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have established two different wikis. One is a wiki for a company, and all it has is company-specific stuff, so obviously it's licensing is highly restrictive for its content. The other one is one for general public consumption, and the standard license on it is a multi-license of practically every major attribution and copyleft license available (incl. GFDL & CC-BY-3.0). We allow importation Wikipedia content, but that has to be distinguished from standard-licensed material, and the implementation and maintenance of that is a real pain. If/when Wikipedia switches to a truly compatible license, all those headaches will miraculously disappear, and we can pull the GFDL-markup templates and just let everything coexist peacefully. :-) Not quite utopia, but it will be a big step for data freedom. —Willscrlt (Talk)
