Bachelar core

Bachelor’s Core
Most CityU degrees in the School of Management require the same basic classes for a “bachelor’s core”, or classes all bachelor’s graduates from the school should know. These classes are considered to be important knowledge and skills for graduates with degrees in accounting, business administration, and information systems. The four classes are: Critical thinking, Writing for the Professions, Interpretation of Statistics and Data, and Ethics. Other than the Accounting degree, which combines ethics and law together in an accounting specific class, all degrees from the school of management will have all these core classes included in the degree program.

This course actually teaches students thinking techniques, from interpreting the world around themselves, to the differences between facts, inferences, assumptions, and opinions. These differences and skills are developed through a combination of reading, the [discussion board], exams, and writing assignments. In the end, students should have more accurate perceptions of the surrounding world, the ability to critically evaluate opinions, data, and assumptions, and identify fallacies in arguments. These skills should enable students to make better judgments with regard to interpreting financial statements and source documents (Accounting), assessing business improvement suggestions (Business Administration), and the strengths and weaknesses of new technologies and coding techniques detailed in media.

This course covers the importance of effective writing in organizations and professional practices. Throughout the course, examples of poor writing are examined and compared to effective writing samples. The keys to effective writing as covered in this class include a focus on the end-user of the document, keeping writing free from bias, and keeping writing succinct and clear, to save the reader’s time.
These concepts are studied through required readings, are discussed in the [discussion board], and practiced through writing assignments. Students practice the following forms of writing: letter, memo, e-mail, report, PowerPoint presentation, and resume.

This course covers the importance and calculations behind statistical methods. Non-quantitative skills include understanding the difference between correlation and causation (a link between two pieces of information may not mean a cause-and-effect relationship), critical evaluation of statistical examples, and presentation of statistics in an unbiased method. Quantitative tools covered include descriptive statistics analysis, probability, and inferential statistics (making predictions of the future about past data).
This course includes required textbook reading, regular homework assignments, [discussion board] postings which compare qualitative statistics concerns, exams, and a statistical report compiled by the student. This will include collecting sample data, analyzing the data, drawing conclusions, and communicating the findings in a comprehensive report.

This course includes defining ethics, analysis of classical ethical theories, and applying these theories to assigned problems. Students read the text, apply the week’s concepts and teaching to applied problems, and write a series of papers researching ethical traditions or applying ethical theories to real-life situations.
Several classical ethical traditions are covered, and students are encouraged to use the traditions that seem most appropriate on a personal level. In other words, there is not a “single right ethical tradition” in this class.

Online Learning mode

CityU provides different modes for many of their programs and classes offered. A very popular mode for many students is the online mode of learning. This mode is also called the distance learning mode. The online version of these classes is conducted through what is called the blackboard, an online learning environment. A student can “attend” class with an internet connection and a computer. The student is able to login to the blackboard and can obtain access to discussions with classmates and instructor, assignments, class syllabus, lectures, group projects and many other classroom like tools. Online learning allows the student to essentially learn and attend class from any location and at any time of the day or not. This mode offers extreme flexibility for those students that find it nearly impossible to attend a regular in class mode of teaching.

Discussion Board

The discussion board is a part of the online classroom at City University which is used as a learning tool. The discussion board is a way for all classmates as well as the instructor of the online class to communicate with one another through one portal. Through this portal questions can be posed and students can respond with their comments, questions and feedback about these questions. The purpose of the discussion board is to promote normal interaction of those students and instructors that are not able to meet face to face. Each person can use the discussion board as a way to voice anything that they would normally be able to voice through a classroom environment. Students can reply to any other student or instructors original posting and replies from any student or instructor on that particular topic are limitless. Each thread on the discussion board is a new topic of discussion and every person is able to create as many threads as they wish. This tool helps students understand various topics through the eyes of classmates and instructors as well as allows the instructor to better determine the students understanding of the materials being taught.

Library

City University offers all of its student’s access to Library services regardless of what location or mode of classes the student is enrolled. A student can access all of the CityU library services via the internet through CityU’s website as long as they have set up a My.CityU portal username and password. This Library can be accessed any time and from any location. The CityU library offers its users an extensive catalog of Databases offering a variety of articles, full newspapers and magazines and even excerpts from books. Full journals are also available through the CityU library. Through online databases students can request articles that are not readily available. These articles will than be sent to the student electronically using Adobe and E-Delivery. A student can also access library material onsite and in person where they will have access to a vast amount of reading materials. Resources for students using CityU library online are organized based on the specific course of study. This helps the students search for materials pertaining to their specific class. Resources are also available by program. The student can research a topic based on the specific program he or she is enrolled in. The library also offers students the opportunity to communicate with library staff that can assist students in finding students the materials that they need. The library services also provide students with information on sourcing information as well as plagiarism.

Study Tips

There are several main types of work which are common to the majority of classes at CityU. For distance learning classes, these are: required readings, discussion posts, homework, group projects, research papers, and exams. Different courses will utilize different combinations of these, but these six topics cover the vast majority of what workload will be found in a given course. In general, the first three (required readings, discussion posts, and homework) are weekly recurring obligations, while the last three (group projects, research papers, and exams) are larger but infrequent events.

For the recurring assignments, the reading, discussion questions, and homework, a regular schedule for doing the work is very valuable. Keeping a regular schedule helps ensure these regular tasks get done without waiting until the last minute. Also, a regular schedule will allow the student’s mind to more easily get in the correct “mode” for the task at hand, be it taking in new information (reading), solving problems by applying formula (homework) or participating in the [discussion board].

Larger assignments could be group projects, research papers, or exams. Since these assignments are larger, they are more involved than the recurring assignments. They are also less frequent. Since the recurring assignments will be there every week, it is important to do a little work on the larger assignments regularly throughout the quarter. This does not necessarily mean every week throughout the quarter, but work should be done on these assignments more than over a single weekend.
A sample division of work for a research paper could be as follows:

Week Work to be done
Week 1 Nothing
Week 2 Select Topic
Week 3 Nothing
Week 4 Research Articles
Week 5 Organize Information
Week 6 Nothing
Week 7 Draft Paper
Week 8 Draft Paper
Week 9 Revise/Edit/Finalize
Week 10 Submit Final Copy

Exams are somewhat different, in that they do not take up a lot of time, but a large amount of the grade is riding on the results of the test. Because of this, scheduling the test should be done with care. Ideally, the test should be scheduled for a time when the student has a “fresh mind”. This will mean different things to different students, but a good amount of sleep before the exam is helpful, as is being mentally alert. This could mean a brisk run, a cup of coffee, or an energy drink.
Thoroughly knowing the material makes the entire testing process less stressful. Finally, some generic test-taking strategies for tackling the exam are useful. One is to overview the entire test before starting on a single problem, and working from easiest to most difficult. The specific test-technique will depend upon the student, but some sort of plan will be motivational and reassuring.
