LMIS 687 Project 3: School Library Program Management Manual
The School Library Program Management Manual is an important project in the graduate program and
will be written and complied as a requirement across at least two courses in the program. It should be
archived by the learner (after suggestions for change have been made by the instructor) for retrieval
and expansion in additional courses and/or in the final program portfolio. The project can take on
several variations according to what is available to the learner, where he/she is working professionally,
and what the school district already has in place. The project could range from creating a manual from
scratch to converting an existing (and already school board approved) manual to an electronic format
and adding any missing components.
1) Practicing library media specialists in the program are encouraged to seek out existing library
policies and procedures; review, edit and update them; migrate it to an electronic/Web 2.0
format and then prepare a plan to seek administrative and school board approval for the
updated policies.
2) Those learners not currently employed in a school library media center should seek out a school
library media specialist with which to collaborate with in updating, and/or writing policy and
procedure for that media center; then migrate it to an electronic/Web 2.0 format. Ask your
instructor school librarian mentor suggestions.
3) If neither of the above scenarios is feasible or if the learner has with no ties to a school library
program, he/she must obtain instructor approval to write policy for a simulated school library
program. The learner will submit a written description of the simulated school and school library
program including student & staff population size, school community size, facility description,
etc. to be kept with the manual as it is being compiled. It will be authored in an electronic/Web
2.0 format of the student’s choice.
