Research Based Strategy for Dealing with Students Behavioral Issues

Ellis's Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

Behavior: A student may ask, "What do I do if I'm not getting along with another classmate?"

- REBT is a cognitive-behavioral strategy child can use to help get along better with others when they are having issues.
-The goal is happiness. The beliefs we hold are the ones that are holding us back from being happy. A child needs to take a step back and see what happened to why that child may not be getting along with others.

The ABC Model
- Children's beliefs are the ones that are holding them back from getting along with others.
A. Something happens
B. You have a belief about the situation
C. You have an emotional reaction to the belief

For example, (A) a child may have said something bad about you. (B) You believe that your classmate had no right to say that about you. (C) You feel anger towards you.
It is the persons belief in B that causes the reaction and emotions in C. If your belief was different then your emotions may be different and your feelings about that person would be different.

Implement REBT:Italic text You can inform your students of the ABC Model and then have your student who doesn't know what to do when they are not getting along with another classmate. You can have them determine the event that may have caused the peers to not get along. Have them state their beliefs about why it happened, and then what happened because of the event. You can have the students analyze the events and focus on the consequences and how they relate to their beliefs about their peers not getting along with them.

The Challenge:Italic text It takes away from the classroom teaching when a teacher should be working with everyone teaching them part of the curriculum, but if students are not getting along a teacher is going to focus on that.
