Two non-credit community education classes being offered by a recent seminary graduate and experienced instructor:
Introduction to Hebrew Language and Culture. Offered through Linn-Benton Community College's department of community education, this class will combine basic Biblical Hebrew instruction with introductory lectures on the history of that language, the Hebrew Bible, and its attendant culture. No prior knowledge of Hebrew, Bible, or ancient history will be assumed. The class is fast-paced but low-pressure, designed to encourage interaction with the Biblical text and to foster an appreciation of its cultural and historical origins. The weekly class will meet Wednesday evenings from 10/2 to 12/4, 6:30-8:50 at LBCC's Albany campus. Cost = $85 + $40 required textbook.
Church and Synagogue: The Parting of the Ways. What modern people understand as two different religions were not always so sharply distinguished. Through historical lectures and study of ancient documents this class will try to discover how the divergence of "Judaism" and "Christianity" came to pass during a period extending c. 200 B.C.E. to 350 C.E. Among other subjects, we will explore the diverse range of Jewish religious thought prior to the Jesus movement, innovation and tradition in earliest Christian belief and practice, the formation of rabbinical Judaism, and the eventual antagonism between early church and synagogue. Offered through Linn-Benton Community College's department of community education, the class meets weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 10/2 to 12/4, 1:30-3:20 at Albany Senior Center in downtown Albany. Cost = $58.
Registration through LBCC's online Webrunner service http://sis.linnbenton.edu/ begins September 9 and ends the second week of class.
