Fundraising draft: see also Budget
Yearly budget (bare-bones )
This bare bones budget assumes we accommodate at most twice our pre-wikispot.org bandwidth and general machine usage.
Expenses
-
$30 for domain registration
-
$600 for colocation of a single 1U server
-
$400 for general-purpose hardware purchases
-
$200 for promotional materials such as fliers and how-to guides
-
$1000 for legal and administrative fees associated with trademark registration ($300) and legal consultation ($800).
($10 domain registration fee) x 3
(figure includes 512kbit/sec bandwidth and power)
(new hard drives, racking rails, memory)
Total: $1,830
Commentary
If we are faced with this budget and would like to continue offering services we would be forced to purchase low-quality bandwidth or engage in emergency fundraising efforts. Such fundraising efforts, if successful, would push us into the more comfortable budget areas. Our experience suggests that during periods of growth we also experience periods of giving.
Yearly budget (reasonable)
This reasonable budget assumes we accommodate at most ten-times our pre-wikispot.org bandwidth and general machine usage.
Expenses
-
$30 for domain registration
-
$1200 for colocation of two 1U servers
-
$480 for additional bandwidth
-
$1600 for an additional server purchase
-
$600 for general-purpose hardware purchases
-
$200 for promotional materials such as fliers and how-to guides
-
$1000 for legal and administrative fees associated with trademark registration ($300) and legal consultation ($800).
($10 domain registration fee) x 3
(figure includes 1Mbit/sec bandwidth and power)
(figure estimated around 1Mbits/sec in additional bandwidth)
(new hard drives, racking rails, memory)
Total: $5,110
Commentary
This budget would provide for us a reasonable expansion path from our current pre-wikispot.org services. However, rapid growth without matching donations would still be a possibility that could cause us to have to intentionally slow our service growth or seek more inexpensive bandwidth.
Yearly budget (ideal)
This ideal budget assumes we accommodate at most 30-times our pre-wikispot.org bandwidth and general machine usage.
Expenses
-
$30 for domain registration
-
$3600 for colocation of six 1U servers
-
$1440 for additional bandwidth
-
$8000 for an additional 5 server purchases
-
$1500 for general-purpose hardware purchases
-
$500 for promotional materials such as fliers and how-to guides
-
$1000 for legal and administrative fees associated with trademark registration ($300) and legal consultation ($800).
($10 domain registration fee) x 3
(figure includes 3Mbit/sec bandwidth and power)
(figure estimated around 3 Mbit/sec in additional bandwidth)
(new hard drives, racking rails, memory)
Total: $16,030
Commentary
This budget would provide for us a comfortable and ideal situation that would allow for growth without worry for future constraints.
Calculation notes
The formula used to compute our bandwidth is megabits = ((.4*x)*512)/1024 where x is the number times larger than pre-wikispot.org we would like to become. Megabits go for around $40/megabit. We assume that we have 512kbits included in our current 1U server, which we then subtract from the formulated total, and that we are using around 40% of our 512kbit/sec. See http://baxter.cernio.com/mrtg for our current machine usage — this may need to be adjusted.
Our pre-wikispot.org peak machine usage is around 40% of 200% possible (CPU).
