Domain name setup requests
I'd like to donate
http://www.berkwiki.org to the WikiSpot cause. Was going to start up my own Berkeley wiki but never got around to it. The DNS settings are set up on my side. —AndrewChen
Hey Andrew I am trying to do a Berkeley Wiki so would it be cool to use the domain for
http://cal.wikispot.org. Thanks. —AbhiYerra
The CNAME entry for berkwiki.org is set to domains.wikispot.org. —AndrewChen
2007-04-12 20:54:35 Also, just as a followup, why does
http://www.stocktonwiki.org point to wikispot but
http://stocktonwiki.org still points to godaddy? Is there something I need to do to get it to work both ways? —mjyoung
It was working just a second ago when I clicked on it so you probably changed something? Make sure that you have the "fowarding" set up — see the section Details on this "forwarding". —PhilipNeustrom
2007-04-12 21:11:31 I believe I did everything that the Custom Domain Page said to do. It points to wikispot if I have a "www" before "stocktonwiki.org" but not if its just "stocktonwiki.org". Also, how do I get my domain to point to
http://stocktonwiki.wikispot.org instead of WikiSpot's main page? I'll attach some screenshots of my godaddy settings, maybe that'll help.
Your setup looks good. You need to change the part that says "stocktonwiki.wikispot.org" to be "www.stocktonwiki.org," though. It could be lag on godaddy's end — you'll want to play with it a bit more, maybe (maybe turn off the forwarding and then turn it back on again). It won't point to the actual wiki until the switch is flipped, which I can do once the domain looks like it's set up right. What it should be doing is forwarding you to "www.stocktonwiki.org" when you go to "stocktonwiki.org," and all the pages will look like the main wiki spot hub until we flip the switch. —PhilipNeustrom
2007-04-12 21:22:57 Okay, thanks a lot. I've now changed the domain forwarding to "www.stocktonwiki.org" —mjyoung
Okay, looks like your setup got fixed. I flipped the switch and it should be working now! —PhilipNeustrom
2007-04-19 06:44:58 Hiya Philip, Thank you for all the help with Torontopedia! My brother lives in the city just west of Toronto, Mississauga, and he's started the Wikisauga site. Please activate
http://www.wikisauga.WS , we just registered the domain and immediately made correct CNAME and forwarding steps, wikisauga.ws should end up at
http://mississauga.wikispot.org . And Yes, we chose .WS that is dot-w-s as the top level domain, it's kinda weird at first blush...but the more we thought about it, wikisauga-dot-wikisauga aka wikisauga-dot-w-s just makes sense to us :-) . —HimySyed
Okay, should be all set up now! —PhilipNeustrom
Thanks a million Philip! I imagine you are backed up beyond belief with things on your to do list and waking up this morning and seeing the domain already resolving is greatly appreciated. :-) —HimySyed
.WS should stand for Wiki Spot. And we should sell all of the TLDs for it. Philip, you need to implement this plan now! —BrentLaabs
At least consider doing that. I kept saying out loud to myself, "wikisauga dot wiki spot" and it works well on a number of points. I registered www.wikisauga.ws using
http://www.gimmemydomains.com/ which is a reseller for GoDaddy. Your
existing GoDaddy screen shots for domain CNAME-ing and Forwarding were identical to GimmyMyDomain's control panel. Wikispot as a non-profit could also consider becoming a reseller for .ws and offer an option for people to choose a "dot wiki spot" top level domain. the money generated would be low, but the visual is well worth considering : www.wikispot.ws or said outloud, "wikispot dot wiki spot". —HimySyed
2007-05-02 03:38:19 Hi, I would like to setup www.crimsonwiki.net to point to harvardwiki.wikispot.org. The DNS settings are set up on my side. :) —Vijay
Okay, this should be working now! Sorry for the delay — we've been monitoring some server stuff that requires us to not restart things for several days :) —PhilipNeustrom
2007-05-16 01:38:49 Hello~ may I request to have www.westsacwiki.net set up to point to www.westsac.wikispot.org please? Thank you in advance! =D —MasumiWatanabe
Hey Masumi, looks like things aren't quite set up on your end yet. I'm seeing a strange error when I visit
http://www.westsacwiki.net/ I'm not familiar with the setup for domaindiscover.com (that's who you're using, aye?) exactly, so it might take some experimentation. It looks like you have a "redirect" from www.westsacwiki.net to "www.westsacwiki.net" which won't work. It should redirect "westsacwiki.net" to "www.westsacwiki.net" and then do a "CNAME" from "www.westsacwiki.net" to "domains.wikispot.org" —PhilipNeustrom
Hey Philip, I'm on TierraNet and it seems like the forwarding function was somewhat cooky and included the loop "www.westsacwiki.net => www.westsacwiki.net." It *should* be golden now though... and thanks again! —MasumiWatanabe
Okay, should be all set up now! —PhilipNeustrom
2007-05-25 08:40:11 Hi there, may I please request to have www.ojaiwiki.com set up to point to ojai.wikispot.org? Should all be good on my end. Thanks much!
tyler93023 (tribal core) —tyler93023
Okay, should be all set! —PhilipNeustrom
Yup, all set - thanks Philip! —tyler93023
2007-06-04 17:27:32 www.yada.org = triangle.wikispot.org ...thanks! —ReidSerozi
Hey Reid, things don't seem set up on your end yet. I'll flip the switch here once they are —PhilipNeustrom
green light, thanks. —ReidSerozi
Okay, should be good to go! —PhilipNeustrom
2007-06-22 23:26:08 Hi, I've set up the DNS at my end for slingshot-game.org - and would like that to point to slingshot.wikispot.org
Thanks, Jon —Musther
Okay, you should be set! —PhilipNeustrom
Thanks a lot, that was very quick! —Musther
2007-07-25 18:53:11 Hey Philip, I picked up www.westsacwiki.org which I'd prefer to use as the top level domain name. May I request a change please? Thank you! —MasumiWatanabe
Okay, should be all set. —PhilipNeustrom
Thanks a bunch as usual. XD —MasumiWatanabe
2007-08-31 05:30:28 Awesome, thanks for your help, Ace! —KarlMogel
2007-09-25 23:35:40 Hi there, followed your godaddy instructions and so if i may request, could you please enable www.theterrace.ws to point to theterrace.wikispot.com. Much appreciated and thankyou for providing such an awsome tool! —Roja
Okay, should be good now. —PhilipNeustrom
2007-09-26 10:49:38 Thankyou very much! Once the term starts i will have a collection for the website :) —Roja
2007-10-08 08:39:08 Please point
http://scruzwiki.org/ (and
http://www.scruzwiki.org/) to
santacruz. thanks! —Graham.Freeman
To replace scwiki.org? We can only have one master domain per wiki (on our end). If you want those as aliases you should set up a redirect to scwiki.org (this is apparently better for search engines, too?) —PhilipNeustrom
2007-10-15 06:53:23 The top contributors to the Santa Cruz Wiki have agreed that it makes sense to use scruzwiki.org instead of scwiki.org. (This is primarily because scwiki.com and .net are taken by domain squatters.) So, we don't want to just redirect to scwiki.org.
However, scwiki.org has been used for 18 months now, so although we don't want it to be "primary" anymore neither do we want to get rid of it. Also, the single point of contact for that domain was unresponsive when I tried to reach him, so changing its DNS may prove difficult.
How hard would it be to improve the Wiki Spot code so that it can handle multiple domain names per wiki?
Failing that, if we hosted the Santa Cruz wiki separately would we retain the Interwiki-ness? If not, what would it take to make that possible?
thanks,
Would it be okay to redirect pages on scwiki.org to scruzwiki.org pages? That's all I mean when I say "master domain." (e.g. see
http://www.torontopedia.ca/Quakers and
http://www.torontopedia.tyo.ca/Quakers — torontopedia used torontopedia.tyo.ca for a while when they were first getting started) Edit: I'm pretty sure this is what you wanted, so I flipped the switches. It should be dandy now, and no old links should break. Search engines will update their links to point to the new domain, too, because of the type of redirect we use. —PhilipNeustrom
2007-10-17 03:12:46 Awesome; thanks, Philip! My couch is your couch. —Graham.Freeman
2007-11-07 18:15:30 Good afternoon! I would like to request that
http://minnesota.wikispot.org please point to
http://wiki2.minnesota-vacation-guide.com . The CNAME is set up properly and working on my end. Thanks in advance! Chris. —ChristopherNalty
This should be all set up now. —PhilipNeustrom
Thanks for the super fast install, Philip! —ChristopherNalty
2007-12-17 07:53:29 I would like to setup www.nevadawiki.org so that it points to nevada.wikispot.org. The DNS settings should be good to go. Thank you! —ASUN
Should be all set up and good to go! —PhilipNeustrom
2007-12-17 08:15:33 Sweet. Thanks! —ASUN
2008-02-05 14:02:26 I've today pointed the domain "www.makten.net" to "domains.wikispot.org" for the newly created wiki "makten.wikispot.org" and would like to request a domain name setup. Many thanks for this excellent service! —brunberg
It doesn't look like the "redirect" from makten.net to www.makten.net is set up yet?
You're right. I just set up that direct and it seems to work now.
Done!
Many thanks!
2008-02-11 23:11:21 Hi Philip, got a new domain for harvard wiki at www.harvardslist.com (people were confused with what a wiki was). Can we set that up to point to harvardwiki.wikispot.org. The DNS settings are set up on my side. —Vijay
Hey, it doesn't look like harvardslist.com is redirecting to www.harvardslist.com.
Hmm, I'm not sure how it got reset. I have reforwarded harvardlist.com to www.harvardslist.com —Vijay
You'll want to make it so when you visit harvardslist.com you're redirected to www.harvardslist.com. I think the way you have it set up right now is so that harvardlist.com is pointed at wikispot.org. You'll want to do a "http redirect" from harvardlist.com to www.harvardslist.com.
Sorry I had Domain stay enabled. I disabled it now. Registrer.com is complete crap, but they have free 1yr domain registration promotion. - Vijay
Should be all set! By the way, there's three odd blocky-non-rendering-unicode characters before the "Harvard's List" title for me when I view your wiki. Also, do you want help making a logo?
2008-02-17 20:08:07 Thanks - I have set up the DNS configuration for NLUG.ORG for the wikispot page, NLUG.WIKISPOT.ORG I believe I am ready to have the processes in Step 5 done, in order to finish the domain name transition. —matthewcraig
2008-02-18 03:58:43 Howdy, if there's anyway to get the new ObsoleteSkills.com pointed to
obsoleteskills as quickly as possible, it would be great... it is linked from a fairly high traffic blog. —JabberWokky
Looks like it's still not pointed @ wiki spot:
philip@philip-laptop:~$ nslookup obsoleteskills.com Server: 192.168.1.1 Address: 192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: obsoleteskills.com Address: 64.13.192.160 philip@philip-laptop:~$ nslookup www.obsoleteskills.com Server: 192.168.1.1 Address: 192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.obsoleteskills.com Address: 64.13.192.160
2008-02-18 04:30:27 Nlug folks: the DNS isn't set up right yet — you'll want to set the cname on www and then an http redirect on non-www. Right now it's an http redirect to nlug.wikispot.org —PhilipNeustrom
2008-02-22 16:17:46 could you help to point wiki.yui4j.org to yui4j.wikispot.org? the DNS configuration is done.
C:\>ping wiki.yui4j.org
Pinging domains.wikispot.org [209.237.247.200] with 32 bytes of data:
fyi, yui4j is a new open source project.
Thank you very much!
Hey, 2008-2-22 @ 11:15AM PST I'm seeing the wiki.yui4j.org domain not pointed here. —PhilipNeustrom
2008-03-07 17:20:20 I have initially setup:
http://fwd.wikispot.org/Front_Page. I have registered
http://www.fwdwiki.org with GoDaddy and performed the necessary steps on GoDaddy. Can you update your DNS for this? Thanks. Matt Fleming. p.s. I made a donation via Paypal. This is a great site and idea - thanks for your efforts. —mattfleming
The domain should be all set now! In case you don't already know, good places to discuss and ask things: FAQ and Community Discussion (we've got a mailing list linked on that page, too). Best, PhilipNeustrom
2008-04-16 22:19:06 May I set up
http://www.thehoustonwiki.com to point to
http://houston.wikispot.org? The CNAME settings should be correct. Thanks! —TGrantBelgard
I just did a check — looks like it's (at least on my end) not set up yet — www is CNAME'd to "thehoustonwiki.com" and it should be CNAME'd to domains.wikispot.org. It doesn't look like there's a "forward" from thehoustonwiki.com to www.thehoustonwiki.com. Then again, this usually takes a little while to update so I'll check again in a couple hours. —PhilipNeustrom
Okay, now I'm sure everything's working. Sorry for the delay! —TGrantBelgard
Okay, all set! Thanks, Phililp!!!
2008-04-22 22:46:45 Heya Philip, could you setup www.elkgrovewiki.org so that it points to elkgrove.wikispot.org. The DNS settings should be good to go (I just changed it about a half hour ago :) —RodneyBlackwell
All set!
2008-05-13 11:58:16 Good Morning Philip and fellow wikispotters, after some internal discussion, we changed the top level domain for Wikisauga from .ws to our Canadian .CA. We found people here in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada found the .WS not as mainstream an idea as we had hoped. In short, .WS is bit too unusual for Canadians. I still feel it's a good top level domain, just not for wikisauga.
We did the necessary CNAME change for
http://www.wikisauga.CA pointing to domains.wikispot.org and the necessary forwarding for wikisauga.ca to www.wikisauga.ca .
Philip, can you change make the change. We're abandoning the .WS, it wasn't much linked to so we'll gain more than we'll lose by migrating to Wikisauga.CA. — Thanks!
Good morning Philip - When you get a chance, could you set up www.syracusewiki.org so that it points to syracuse.wikispot.org. I just changed the DNS settings on Yahoo Domains, so it should be all set. — Thanks! —wilfis
It looks like the www (CNAME) part is set up, but the "forward" part isn't — going to syracusewiki.org shows me a yahoo parked page instead of redirecting to www.syracusewiki.org.
When I followed your instructions for creating a domain name forward on Yahoo Domains, I received the error message, "The starting address and destination address could not be the same." I just created a C name record with "*.syracusewiki.org" as the source and "domains.wikispot.org" as the destination. I believe this should do the trick — I have used this method successfully in other scenarios involving domain mapping.
Thanks,
Bill
The problem is that when people go to syracusewiki.org they won't get redirected to the right place (they won't get anything right now. This is because CNAME records only work for sub-domains). Try clearing out all the existing settings (CNAME, other stuff) and setting the domain to be "parked" (or something such). Then work through the instructions, creating the "forward" first. I'm thinking it might be that the "forward" allows the syracusewiki.org -> www.syracusewiki.org but only if nothing else has been touched first.
If that doesn't work then I'd try something more clever, like making the forward to "www.syracusewiki.org/Front_Page"
Philip - I reset my DNS settings but still cannot create a domain name forward on Yahoo Domains. To be honest, I'm not so concerned about
http://syracusewiki.org not redirecting to www.syracusewiki.org right now. My bigger priority is getting www.syracusewiki.org to point to the pages at syracuse.wikispot.org, rather than to the wikispot home page — which is what happens at present.
Thx,
Bill
Okay, I'll flip the switch once the www-version is set up again. If you feel comfortable, you can change your yahoo domains login details and shoot me an email (philipn@gmail.com) with them and I can take a look — I'd love for the directions up here to be correct but I don't use Yahoo domains myself. —PhilipNeustrom
I have modified the CNAME records to point to domains.wikispot.org, so please flip the switch when you can. Thanks! —wilfis
2008-05-26 19:21:13 I'm setting up bellingham.wikispot.org in Bellingham, WA - I've registered the domain name bellinghamwiki.org, and followed the steps to get it setup, so hopefully once you guys sprinkle the 'magic' on the page it'll work! ;-) —japerry
All set! By the way, I noticed you have "bellinghamwiki.org" forward to "bellinghamwiki.wikispot.org" (which we then forward to "www.bellinghamwiki.org") That'll work, but it might be better to switch it to forward to "www.bellinghamwiki.org" if it's not too annoying to do. —PhilipNeustrom
It looks like you did something nasty to your domain settings — I can't reach the domain now (I could early this morning). —PhilipNeustrom
2008-06-13 01:04:49 VME has decided to turn the woodlandwiki.org domain name over to the WikiSpot cause. I have made the appropriate DNS changes which should propagate out tonight. We all look forward to making the Woodland WikiSpot Wiki better, and hopefully having an appropriate domain name will help in some way. —ChrisLambertus
The DNS changes have propagated, and woodlandwiki.org is ready to direct to woodland.wikispot.org. —ChrisLambertus
It doesn't look like it's fully set up yet — www.woodlandwiki.org resolves to a different site. Also, you probably shouldn't use a A record for woodlandwiki.org pointing to the wiki spot IP — it's liable to change at some point, hence the kind of complicated redirection instructions. —PhilipNeustrom
Fair enough. I was trying to be lazy, but ultimately I just set up an http redirect on that server. I see that the DNS has not in fact propagated correctly, seems sort of halfway there. I'll follow up when I've seen the new names propagate. —ChrisLambertus
2008-07-13 06:45:59 I'd like to setup the custom domain name renowiki.org for RenoWiki on wikispot. Thanks! —DanComing
2008-07-30 10:37:01 I've had the domain
http://www.slingshot-game.org working with the wiki
http://slingshot.wikispot.org for a long time now, but noticed just now that it's not working, try it and you'll see you go to the wikispot home. Thanks for your help. —Musther
I turned the domain off a couple days ago when I noticed the domain was having issues. It should be all set again! —PhilipNeustrom
Ah yes, the hosting company had a severe server issue, coincidentally I was away and so couldn't do anything. It's all working now, thanks a bunch! —Musther
2008-08-01 02:45:43 hey. I have completed steps 1 through 7 (set up CNAME and forwarding for smadar.org). Can you set us (smadarcsa.wikispot.org) up on your side? Our community really enjoys our wiki. Thanks for all your hard work. —DavidBessler
You should be set! —PhilipNeustrom

2009-01-11 22:27:15 Greetings, I just set up the

2009-01-20 08:57:04 Hello, we wish to use www.dfowiki.org name for our "darkfallonline" wiki. I've done the necessary changes on our dns host. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time. Edit: I had to turn the page to redirection as I don't know when/if you'll have a chance to read this and add the record. But there's no problem with the records, I can change it anytime you're ready. —hellion
Okay, just let me know. I have to do this by hand and I was a bit behind here :) —PhilipNeustrom
2009-01-30 00:02:33 I setup

2009-04-19 16:56:39 Hiya, can I point
http://www.rattypaedia.org to
http://ratty.wikispot.org/ please? Cheers. -
AnnetteRand —AnnetteRand
It doesn't look like things are quite set up properly on your end. You want to make the 'www' entry a CNAME to 'domains.wikispot.org', not make it redirect to http://domains.wikispot.org. It's confusing, I know.
There's a fair to middling chance it's working now. I think I've got it right. Sorry to take up your time.
Not quite. Going to rattypaedia.org sends me to
http://domains.wikispot.org instead of
http://www.rattypaedia.org.
OK. From here it's going to the front page of wikispot.org, which presumably is still wrong. Will try again. Sigh.
www.rattypeaedia.org should look like wikispot.org's front page. rattypeaedia.org should redirect to www.rattypeadia.org
Doh. OK, I think I'm there now. Is there a prize for the longest message series? An RTFM t-shirt?
done. -p
Cheers. :-D
2009-05-03 23:46:54 Hi! Can
http://irvinewiki.org be setup for
http://irvine.wikispot.org. Thanks. —[

Hey there. It looks like the domain is redirecting right to irvine.wikispot.org. Can you go through the instructions & set it up again? Thanks -philip

2009-08-05 20:24:42 When you get a chance, please direct
http://www.camarillowiki.org to camarillowiki.wikispot.org, I believe I've got the cname record setup properly already. Thanks. —AlexMandel
You mean
http://camarillo.wikispot.org/?
Yes, that's what he means. Thanks for helping! I'm super excited to get a domain name that people can remember. :) —MicheleTobias
2009-09-25 02:49:56 When you get a chance, please direct
http://www.mongolwiki.org and
http://www.mongolwiki.net to
http://mongolwiki.wikispot.org This is my first wiki, but I believe I followed your directions correctly. Thanks. —chingis
hi, my domain name is still not up and running, is there something wrong with my configuration ... [chingis]
Apologies for the delay. I can only set one domain to be 'the' domain for the wiki. Which of the two would you prefer? You can set the other, slightly-less-loved one to redirect to the slightly-more-loved one. —PhilipNeustrom
2009-11-04 02:35:19 I just wanted to check on CamarilloWiki.org. The address still redirects to WikiSpot's homepage. Is there any other info you need from me to get this to direct to Camarillo.wikispot.org? —MicheleTobias
OK, should be good now.
